So what is this 'sourced from process' stuff?  

I'll often see Fairchild datasheets that won't offer any noise information
whatsoever (the infamous 2 page datasheet with the second sheet being sales
contacts)--while claiming 'low noise amplifier' in the part description.  They
say, often, "sourced from process 55".

How does one learn what 'process 55' is?

So how can one tell in selecting discrete parts, like bjts or jfets, whether
that part is a specific design or a catch-all for what may come off the line
that fits that spec?
