Well, the problem is that it was powered up while it was IMproperly
wired.  There was a cloud of smoke and everything.  I rewired it and
got a second puff of smoke, but the third time I powered it up it
seemed to work properly.  I'm just worried that it will fail in the
future and fry the ethernet chip.

I'm thinking I burned out the protection diodes, but now that they're
all dead open everything else seems to be OK.
