Respect to Stuart for his work, but I have a different idea:
I think the installer GUI could be replaced with a Makefile. The
sources could be stored uncompressed on the CD.
I looked into this once, but configure on one of the packages failed
when it was configured outside of the source tree. I don't remember
which one it was, but if this could be fixed, a simpler CD
distribution could be made, to be used like this:
1) cd ~/some_build_directory
2) PREFIX=/install_prefix make /mnt/cdrom/Makefile install
3) there is no step 3.
Another option is to plop some giant statically-linked binaries on the
CD. No install necessary, just lots of RAM.
