As one of the people who likes the two key shortcut method (due to being able to mouse with one hand and keyboard with the other, a bit like when playing an FPS :-)) a simple method to satisfy everyone is make the keyboard shortcuts be in a configuration file. We did this for a game (Oolite, an Elite clone). Have sensible defaults, but an alternative that's easily loaded just by changing the configuration.
