Jack - I have been using gftp for years under KDE, so I doubt if KDE is the 
problem.  If you like ubuntu and KDE, there is a version of ubuntu called 
kubuntu that is set up for KDE.

Just as an aside, I have been using KDE for years and have now and then tried 
gnome for a while.  It doesn't have what I want so I always go back to KDE.
