I was mistaken: there is no device independent PPP driver in the
kernel for 686s, however after reading the doc for the new PPP daemon
I found that it supports a new PPP driver available in the 2.3 kernel
so given that we have the same symptoms both when the PPP daemon is
started and configured by kppp and wvdialconf then my guess is that
this is a daemon issue. The daemon tries the 2.3 mode and after
failing retries in 2.2 mode. Perhaps it is simply a matter of some
redhat idiot building it in a machine who had 2.3 include files or
perhaps to patch it. A thing is sure: we will have to rebuild it.

I don't have a line printer but I have been unable to use the parallel
port Zip drive on the K6 while it works on the PII. However I have a
real SCSI controller on the K6 so I have to check if the problem is
not caused by a conflict between the driver for the SCSI controller
and the ppa driver.
