I have looked at the source and in fact the ppp daemon will just try
the 2.3 method and then revert to the ppp method in case of failure.
Only that in the meantime you have spent a phone call and made the
phone company richer so we will have to check for a newer and smarter
version, talk with the developper for him including detection code or
test the kernel version ourselves.
