This is quite a common system, read the licence for GhostScript for example.
the current version there is released under The Aladdin licence and the
penultimate one and all older are gifted to GNU and released under GPL.

Take care here. The current version of PostgreSQL is rather slow in comparison
with other databases. Things are slated to change a bit for the better when
version 7 comes out. ( soon, but when it's ready ) MySQL is of the order of an
order of magnetude faster, because it does not make anything like as many
checks and does not have all the inheritance baggage that PostgreSQL has.
For a read only database which is updated off-line MySQL is very fine, but it is
not for a true transaction oriented system. mSQL by that fellow in Brisbane is
even faster, but that really is a write once read many thing.

Informix is released free ( as in lunch ) for personal use, but is by no means
free in the speech sense.

It doesn't really matter at this stage what is used for the database as they
all can export the data as csv, or whatever, files which can be read in by
another db. I'm under the impression that since Sun bought out StarDivision the
whole of the Star product line was free ( as in speech as well as lunch )
