Argh, I overlooked the simple thing, yes I installed 64bit python (not sure why I did that...). I'll try 32bit python with 32bit pygame.

Maybe you are trying to use a 64-bit python to run a 32-bit pygame? Since pygame has compiled .pyd files, that probably would not work.

I'm not sure what else I'm missing here.
