Using distutils just run setup.py with the appropriate interpreter. For
instance on my debian unstable machine, if I wanted some package for
python2.2 (python2.1 is default) I'd run:

$python2.2 setup.py install --prefix /usr/local

This would build the package for python2.2 and install it in
/usr/local/lib/python2.2/site-packages/.
