well for "read-only" the archives on activestate are pretty good. but 
you still need to post through email.

i was also thinking about signing up with gmane, which is a public 
mail list to nntp news gateway (both directions). i already use it to 
browse many other mail lists and it even has its own authorization to 
allow unsubscribed posting.
