Why is it rare? I install programs from source all the time. It's a
good way to get to know exactly what's on your system. Plus, I use a
lot of programs that I've customized or patched, so they need to be
built from source. If you're building a Linux from Scratch system the
whole system is built from source. Slackware users often build
packages from source. Would imagine things would be similar for
Gentoo and other distributions that are concerned about source code
and customization.
