... The context isn't
about Linux for it's own sake; it isn't even about
computers all the time...
... The laptop's original OS (MS Windows 7), while it was
dying its slow and ugly death, gave error messages that
seemed to
indicate possible problems with the hard drive and/or
other components. The messages often contradicted each
other;
furthermore, my general success in running Linux distros
on this machine appear to indicate that the hardware isn't
in any
really bad condition...

Sir,
I think it's great that you're trying to use GNU/Linux,
but if you just want to do programming, and you don't have
a lot of time to devote to learning to use another
operating system... but have you seen this?
Windows Portable Version (Beta) http://www.basic256.org/ http://sourceforge.net/projects/basic256prtbl/
You mentioned Microsoft Windows 7 problems... any details,
are you able to take pictures?
When you boot up with GNU/Linux, are you seeing any errors?
I surmise you've already looked at the possibility of
re-loading your Microsoft operating system... if not, we can
discuss this further.
