[school-discuss] Freepats needs volunteers

In case list members don't know, I just wanted to make them aware of the Freepats Open Source project. If you have music related courses or children interested in learning music at your schools, it might be interesting to get involved in. I believe it's a very worthwhile project and the results are usuable by everyone for music composition for any kind of usage from personal to public performance to even commercial purposes.

Freepats is working on collecting Open Source instrument samples for use in music composition. Once they have some quality wave files, they can be converted into various formats to be used with music composition software or programs that play music such as Timidity.

If anyone can help them out by recording some instrument sample sounds, please do so. You can find out more about the project or volunteer to help here:
http://freepats.opensrc.org/

They already have some samples at the site that are available under Open Source licensing. Tell your music departments to check them out. You can use the samples with programs like Timidity to play midi files on machines that may not have adequate audio cards or even on some machines with no sound cards and just speakers. You can also use the samples to make your computer sound like an orchestra or let you practice composing for one.

If you're on any other Open Source or music related mailing list or no anyone who might be interested, please pass this information on to them.

Thanks.
