I'm just a bystander in such things (no experience in video 
production at all), but along with real, quicktime, and WMV, 
consider one or another of the Ogg video formats 
<http://www.xiph.org/ogg/index.html>.  They may not be ready for 
production use, but it'd be nice to have whatever you do 
eventually be available in a non-proprietary format.
