Start with a small, independent test network and work your way up. Use SWAT to 
get going. Find the nearest Samba mirror at http://www.samba.org and go to town. 
  The only other suggestion I would have is to try to maintain a clear vision of 
what it is you want to do with your network while you play around with the 
buttons in SWAT, and to keep a sharp eye out for conflicts that make samba choke.

There's also a cool tool for checking up on your smb.conf file (the list of 
settings that makes samba go), called netparm, run from the command line, that 
gives you a heads up on the viability of your configuration.
