RE: [school-discuss] SchoolForge website status
All,
There has to be a better way to handle website updates than
to take the entire website offline (as happened recently). Such extended
downtime inconveniences not only member organizations, but also visitors to
the website looking for information on Schoolforge or its member
organizations. I would strongly recommend going forward that a "beta" or
"development" website is set-up to make adjustments to the site that require the
entire website to be updated.
There are several positives to such an
approach:
1) Minimize downtime on a website (ensuring availability to
members, supporters, and visitors)
2) Provide a "sandbox" for members and / or supporters to
test, prior to go-live, to find any issues that may prevent it from going live
on schedule.
3) The ability to provide more consistent scheduling for
website updates (and to provide an area other than production for the website
maintainers to work with)
Also, if the website is going to be down for an extended
period of time, member organizations and supporters should be notified via this
list, as well as something other than the "generic" drupal "Site Off-Line" page
that states simply "this Drupal site is currently under maintenance" but which
provides no identifying marks to indicate that it is the Schoolforge
website
Just some suggestions.

Just an update on the SchoolForge website - it should be back online
(and better then ever!) sometime tomorrow. I actually did have a local
installation that had what was planned, but finished the migration and updates
fairly quickly so I got to thinking..well, since it's offline, I might as well
add this.. and that.. and on it went through the weekend. :) I'll be
sure to send out another note when it is back online.
