Thank you for your reply! I'm wondering if the best way to introduce a child to learning materials is not through specific software programs, but through Internet learning portals - for example, kidpix or epals. Did / does your son seem to be building more knowledge through Internet interactions than through specific software packages?

TuxType is great for learning the keyboard.  TuxPaint is good too, but my
son got a little spoiled with all the extras using KidPix on my Windows
machine.

GCompris is fairly good, but a little buggy (at least the version we have).

I had to add most of these using Mandrake's RPM install utility.

If you want a good Live CD (runs completely off of CD-ROM), check out the
Open Source Education Foundation Knoppix CD (Knoppix is Debian-based).  You
can download it at: http://harry.osef.org/~micros/knoppix.iso.  I believe
there is an option to install it to the hard drive.
