This project is part of building a 'demo' box for the school I'm working with. It's already been set up to dual-boot & will install Edubuntu or Vector Linux as well. 

The number of "educational" apps listed at the Edubuntu site is a bit thin, so if it turns out to be the case that Edubuntu is slow & thin on equivalent applications (Jahshaka, Avidemux, etc.) I might opt for trialing a different distro, preferably one with WINE support. 

On the topic of distros, one of my minor favorites for older machines is Vector Linux SOHO. Vector SOHO is *THE* fastest full-featured KDE Linux available next to a Gentoo build (no kidding). All the Slackware distros, even the CD-bootable ones require less RAM (even with all the fat KDE eye candy) and are noticably faster than most other distros. 

There's something the Slackware crowd does to optimize to older hardware that beats the rest. And tho the Slackware distros had been a bit behind on the kernel
 builds and core modules like ALSA, I believe they're caught up now.

I've checked most of them, installing them on a demo box, checking that they are in fact free for academic use (being either freeware or open source, no ads, no 30-day trials...) and sufficiently functional to warrant listing.

Not all are cross-platform - a good number of the MIDI apps are Windows-only, for instance. A fair number of the "educational" wares are OSS and/or x-platform, particularly in the math & chemistry section.

These were just all the obvious ones to install, but I know I have myriad MIDI tools not listed as well as utilities & whatever frivolous games I happened upon ( digipen.edu games, TuxRacer, SuperTux... ;-). With those the list easily exceeds 200....
