[seul-edu] Linux in NT, Australia
This news will probably interest the list:
The Northern Territory government is installing Linux based satellite
download systems in all govt schools in the territory this year (about 180
schools). The systems include a 400mbs satellite link which is run
through a Slackware Linux-based E1 router, which is then connected to a
Linux LAN server. The clients will remain Window$ 98 and McMac for the
most part. A distro has not been settled on for the LAN server - probably
Red Hat. The roll-out has already begun and the entire system will be
installed by the end of the year. The system will be remotely administered
from Sydney, about 2000 kilometres away.
For those of you who don't know the NT, it is a very large chunk of the
Australian continent (way bigger than Texas!) with a population of just
180,000 or so, approximately 30% indigenous Australians. Our schools are
among the most remote in Australia. We are all looking forward to the new
system, which is part of the government's LATIS program.
There are no more details as yet because parts of the contracts are not
yet finalised, but I can keep the list informed if interested.
Mick
