Re: X servers for Windows (was: (FWD) Re: Fw: RE: [seul-edu] Comprehensive StudentManagement)

Michael -- I very much look forward to reading about the details of your
school's support of Open Source development/customization after it actually
happens. In the meantime, I'm responding here to your question about X clients.

I think you mean X servers, not X clients. In the context of X, the server
is the program that runs on the PC and manages the display. Clients are
programs that use the X server as their display (e.g, Netscape, Eterm, all
the ones that start with K, DDD). This seems like a backwards usage, but it
is actually consistent with the technical meansings of "server" and "client".

To the best of my knowledge, there are no Open Source X servers for Windows,
and there never were any. There used to be a free (zero price) one from a
maker of applications that used X, but I haven't seen it around for a couple
of years. A quick check at Tucows turns up one shareware product and two
demos of commercial products; for the details, look at URL

        http://idirect.tucows.com/xwinserver95.html

I probably do not have to tell you that while freeware and shareware are
common on Windows, true Open Source software is still uncommon.
