[seul-edu] Wrapup - Linux Networking Guide for Schools
Doug anticipated me just a bit in his report, but he did so correctly. Based
on the feedback I received on and off the list this week, I don't think
there are sufficient volunteer resources to go ahead with this project now,
though there does seem to be some interest from prospective users of such a
document.
I will certainly return to this idea in the future, to see if it looks more
practical then. (If you are more interested than the responses I summarize
below reflect, please feel free to follow up with me, either here or
privately.)
In the meantime, I suggest that people who need help turn to existing
resources, such as the ones I listed in my earlier messages and the results
of the Weeks/Sechrest collaboration, when that gets written up.
Thank you to everyone who responded. Perhaps another time ....
Briefly, these were the results (almost all on list):
>1. Do others on the list see this as a valuable project? If you have an
>opinion on this, please respond, either on the list or privately to me (as
>you prefer). I'll summarize the responses after a week.
Six people indicated an interest in seeing the project done. Many were
prospective users of Linux in the classroom who saw such a document as
useful to themselves. Otheres were the volunteer writers listed below. The 6
does not count Doug or me.
>2. Are their enough volunteers interested in this project? ... So, if you are
>willing to volunteer, please post a message saying so, along with two details:
>
> 1. your suggestions as to what the scope of the document
> should be (ideally, a proposed list of chapters)
>
> 2. an indication of that pieces of #1 you would be willing to
> take on writing the initial draft of.
Four people volunteered in genreal terms to help with the writing: Michael
Williams, Jeff Waddell, Nicolas Pettiaux, and Bill Ries-Knight. I saw no
detailed responses to the sub-questions, only a pointer to Michael's
"topics" page at the k12linux site.
>3. ... I know others find the step of going from a text "manuscript" to
>a LinuxDoc or DocBook source file easy or interesting or fun....I need
>at least one person to volunteer to handle this step without any help
>from me (beyond producing the source document in text format).
Two people volunteered for this job - list regulars Bill Ries-Knight and
Doug Loss. Two others indicated an interest in helping, but not in using the
DocBook standard that SEUL/edu has adopted.
