here's a reply to part of your problem that I hope will help. I ran
across
a nice document for the printer setup in Redhat Linux from
<A HREF="http://loke.as.arizona.edu/~ckulesa/">Craig Kulesa</A> at
the Steward Observatory. I'd be interested to know if you find it
useful.
