I read that a few years ago when they had CPU wars out with who had a
better 586.
I thought I read that here http://x86.ddj.com/secrets/intelsecrets.htm
but web sites really change  around often. If I remember right some
parts of the cpu did not not meet timing or size specs forcing them to
be removed before the chip hit production leaving a alu that was under
used.
