Re: new wiki (was Re: [school-core] Re: Possible collaboration with schoolforge.net?)

Dear Laura,

Thanks for that investigation. No separator. Good work.

I already added a link on the site's upper left menu to the wiki.
Spam is such a worry, though, that I think we have to shut it down and
approve all new members. It's a big worry that we don't yet have
contributors, but looking around at what people are saying about
mediawiki, I see a trend toward giving up completely or locking them
down. Look at this page, for example:
http://blog.freesound.org/?p=195 Or this one: http://www.tpck.org/
(Read "What happened to the TPACK Wiki?"). So, I've added two
"extensions": one requiring admin approval and another requiring
approval for editing. I must create an approved group of users next.

That always bugs me about wikis. Half of them want the | one way,
half of them don't want the separator. Seems each one works
differently. I personally prefer typing in the HTML and using tags.
Some text editors will let you switch back and forth between the
HTML and the text mode which can be really helpful. The MediaWiki
documentation you linked to
(http://en.wikibooks.org/wiki/MediaWiki_User_Guide/Hyperlinks) shows
use of | as separator and no spaces. I experimented with some
different formats and looks like what works is space as separator
and no |. Will switch it over. We might want to link to some
different documentation for people editing. It doesn't seem to
correspond with the version of wiki we're using properly. I'll check out all the links and make sure they're working somewhat
reasonably. I'm sure there's lots more we can add. I just tried
making a start. It's in no way a comprehensive list at this point. Hope others will add on because I'd really like to find out about some new resources. Once you get some method to combat spamming are we going to add some
kind of link from the main schoolforge.net[1] page so people will
know it's there and be able to find it more easily?

Sincerely, Laura
