I found this in newly created /opt/geda dir:
ll /opt/geda/lib/libgeda.so.38
lrwxrwxrwx 1 john john 17 2010-04-11 18:12 /opt/geda/lib/libgeda.so.38 -> libgeda.so.38.0.1

so I changed it to:

 ll /opt/geda/lib/libgeda.so.38
lrwxrwxrwx 1 john john 31 2010-04-11 18:17 /opt/geda/lib/libgeda.so.38 -> /opt/geda/lib/libgeda.so.38.0.1


and gschem starts.
