Um, it's not.  The symbols are version controlled just like everything
else. ;-)

I had that problem too, so I wrote some new Makefile rules to install them
more quickly!  Try it out.

P.S. Once I've got the build system working in its current form, I may add
--disable-<subpackage> options to configure.  Right now, I'm just going to
get it working and pushed.
