gEDA-user: no components comming up in gschem

I'm new to gschem. I just installed the binary for version 0.0.2 on my
CenOS 5.2 linux system. My problem is similar to the problem described
by Roland Sonnenschein in July, 2007 on this mailing list. He wrote:

    a working sheet.
When I do add -> component
a list of libraries comes up, but I cannot get any components.
The list of libraries displayed matches those directories containing
    sym-files.

In my case, when I start gschem I get a window with a title-B component.
I next try to add a 'resistor-1' component from the 'Basic devices' library,
for example. On the add -> component window, I see a list of libraries. I
enter 'resistor-1' in the "Filter" text box. This removes all listed
libraries except "Basic devices". However, I don't see any
components and the "preview" window remains empty. The online 'gschem warmup'
document says to select the component from the "components list".
I don't see any list of components from which to select a component.

I found file 'resistor-1.sym' within my geda directory, so I tried
adding the following line to my local gafrc file:
 (component-library "/usr/local/geda-0.0.2/share/gEDA/sym/analog")

Now when I type "resistor-1" in the "Filter" text box
of the 'add->component' window, two library names remain ('Basic devices'
and 'analog').

Any suggestions what I should try next?

Griff
