Not wanting to re-include those problem libraries, I added this to
 /usr/local/share/gEDA/system-commonrc

(component-library "${GEDADATA}/sym/wk")

...which fixed it.
The path contains my home-brew components, and is, in fact, a symlink 
to ~/gEDA/sym/wk

I am hoping this will allow other users to access those components on 
a read-only basis. In addition, as the owner, I am now able to edit 
them as well.

My 2003 schematics now display perfectly, and all is well.
