Does gschem support such a way to deal with large devices?
If the answer is yes, then how?

attributes embedded in the placed symbol trigger slotting. attribute name is slotdef=xx when put in a symbol, then attaching the attribute slot=1 at the schematic level.

For splitting for space constraints, just use the same refdes (U1, etc.)
for as many symbols as you need.

djboxsym and jgboxsym generate symbols from the minimal list if two different styles. DJ's djboxsym is the model. See gedasymbols.org for details.
