Well, I am not a professor and things got a little sticky. Turns out, that the
vmplayer image of DSL-N I downloaded is very stripped down -- It does not even
contain a package manager. No gcc, let alone make. FTP and even smb is possible
though. Maybe I have to crosscompile on the host. Seems like I will need a few
days/nights before I get a damn small image of gschem+pcb. Don't hold your
breath...
