gEDA-user: PCB-footprints, what is the meaning of the edge2 flag?

Hello,

can somebody explain what the meaning of this edge2 flag is?

Element["" "" "SOT-523" "" 0 0 -2638 -847 0 23 ""]
(
	Pad[0 -3347 0 -2362 2100 3000 2900 "" "3" "square"]
	Pad[1968 2362 1968 3346 2100 3000 2900 "" "2" "square,edge2"]
	Pad[-1969 2362 -1969 3346 2100 3000 2900 "" "1" "square,edge2"]
	ElementLine [4134 -5512 -4134 -5512 1000]
	ElementLine [4134 5512 4134 -5512 1000]
	ElementLine [-4134 5512 4134 5512 1000]
	ElementLine [-4134 -5513 -4134 5511 1000]

	Attribute("author" "DJ Delorie")
	Attribute("copyright" "2006 DJ Delorie")
	Attribute("use-license" "Unlimited")
	Attribute("dist-license" "GPL")
	)

I have seen this explanation:

>For pads, indicates that the second point is closer to the edge. For
>pins, indicates that the pin is closer to a horizontal edge and thus
>pinout text should be vertical.

I do not really understand this, and I can not see a difference if I
include this flag in my footprint file.

A remark related to this flag: Is it not allowed to insert white spaces
in the flags expression, i.e "square, edge2" ?

Best regards

Stefan Salewski
