The EEPROM has two functions:
- Storing the program
and/or
- Storing VID/PID/DID, which identifies the vendor/product/device, which requires a very small device. When the USB device is plugged in, the transfer of these numbers allows the automatic loading into the PC the appropriate driver. This may ve usefull when a plethora of different gTAG devices exist and one whould like to load the correct driver for each one. Tha bad news is that, theoretically at last, the VID has to be registered at usb.org, which is not definitivelly free, altough not very costly.
I think the best option is to provide room for the EEPROM but later to decide to solder it or not. Fortunately *many* compatible devices alternatives exist with same form-factor.
