Just be careful though... rebuilding a much newer version of GTK and
installing in /usr might break existing applications which are linked
against the older version of GTK. The APIs are compatible, but
underlying technologies and dependent libraries (such as Cairo) are not.
My understanding is that the cairo libraries etc.. need to be specified
when the application is compiled - and cannot just be automatically
pulled in by the newer GTK library as it wishes.
Use RPMs if you can.
