Ok.  Since I didn't really want 6/6 trace/space settings anyway (just used 
that as a test)..

Selected "Signal" routing style and set it for 8 mil traces, 12 mil spacing 
(since this is actually what the board house I have in mind requires for 
their cheaper boards).

Adjusted the Preferences->Sizes:DRC settings to match:

12.0 minimum copper spacing
8.0 minimum copper width
4.0 minimum touching copper  overlap
1.0 minimum silk width
10.0 minimum drill size
8.0 minimum annular ring on drilled pads/vias

Ripped up all the traces that the auto router placed, optimised the list, and 
auto-routed them again.

Same thing happens - the edge connector fingers don't receive any connections.
