gEDA-user: PCB, two simple questions

The first one may be stupid:

When building PCB we get for each footprint file *.fp a png image *.png.
For what is this image necessary?

Next one:
If I remember correctly there was a statement on this list telling that
current pcb generates newlib copies for all the m4 footprints. This may
be fine for most people, but is there an option to disable this behavior
if someone does not like it?
