I started out writing a Perl script and some METAPOST code to produce
dimensioned drawings from footprint files. I then thought it would be
nice to create a single PDF file that contained the dimensioned
drawings and the pages from the manufacturer's component datasheets
used to create the footprints (embedded in the single PDF file).
As I was preparing a writeup for the Freedog meeting I started to add
information about the footprint design. I then remembered that I
forgot to respond to Dan's 22-Feb-2006 email that discussed a
footprint design guide (sorry Dan) so I proceeded to add a little
more.

start of my Footprint Reference document. It contains dimensioned
drawing for a few footprints, the datasheet pages and some of the
design guidelines that I use in creating footprints. As soon as my IPC
funds are approved I will purchase IPC-7351 and update the guidelines.
I also plan to add my footprint name specification to this document.
Coming Attractions ---
For either the June or July Freedog meeting I am planning to release
my bom2tex utility and user manual. bom2tex parses a schematic, groups
similar components and outputs a pdfLaTeX file. The one thing I want
to add is the option to embed a datasheet or a hyperlink to a
datasheet in the bom.
