I use the GPIO modes of the FTDI chips occasionally, and not having

How tough is that to write a driver for? And for what platform are
you doing it? (if you don't mind my asking)
Mac OS X
I have used libusb drivers for it in the past. Available here <http://www.intra2net.com/en/developer/libftdi/index.php

You do a bit of setup work to find and put the part into GPIO mode
then just write bytes to the device.
They have plenty of examples in source.
FTDI also delivers their own D2XX drivers, I have not really used them
but they do work.
The FTDI drivers are also wrapped in python here <http://bleyer.org/pyusb/

That is how I plan on developing future devices.
Because I don't distribute the modules I use generic VID DID
combinations.
