IMHO, in summary, there are three interested parties:

1. The developer
2. The consumer
3. The software

Proprietary licenses protect the developer's rights and abilities.
BSD licenses protect the consumer's rights and abilities.
GPL licenses protect the software's rights and abilities.

At least, that's how I like to think of it.
