   That could easily be done with Freetype, including (very rough) 
antialiasing by varying pad sizes.  A friend of mine (I think he's on 
this list actually, Josh?) wrote a neat little piece of code that uses 
freetype and renders to ASCII art, banner-style.  I expanded on that 
quite a bit and had a lot of fun with it.  The same sort of thing could 
be done within PCB.
