Generally speaking, it's when you move changes "backwards" through the
design flow. Normally, you make changes on the schematic, and re-run
the netlister to propagate those "forward" to the PCB layout. Some
commercial tools allow you to track your changes (swapping pins, etc.)
in the layout editor, and send those changes back to the schematic
editor (kind of like patch files for source code).
