Yes, it is the solution, for now.  Ultimately, the solution is 
to move away from Spice format netlists.

In Spice, the device type is determined by the first letter.  
The letter "M" says to use a built-in MOSFET model.  The name 
(after the nodes) refers to a ".model" "card".  (When using a 
spice netlist, it is common to refer to the lines in a netlist 
as "cards")  The letter "M" does not ever refer to a "subckt".  
If something is defined as a subckt, the first letter of the 
label must be "X".
