IMHO, "lesstif or GTK" is not connected to "OpenGL or plain X".
The first pair is the widget set, which is about buttons, menus and
windows. The second is the choice of graphics engine on the canvas.

Time to plug-in a graphics card? Almost any nvidia model would do.
E.g. FX5200 sells for less than 5 EUR on ebay. Back when I had a FX5200
installed in my box at home, the OpenGL version was already faster than
the regular version.
That said, Peter announced that the desire to make OpenGL optional is a
major block for merging with the main tree.
