Well, I estimate I'll have 180,000 or so graphics. I'm hoping it will
fit on a single DVD by the time I'm done; obviously, loading them all at
runtime isn't an option.

* Have you tested this process from a DVD? The factors Brian describes will have much more influence there than on HDD. Particularly, the time for the drive to wind up will make data proximity much more important.
