Sure, why not?  Well, Stuart just said why not, but that can be fixed,
perhaps a "handle-objects-without-refdes" flag or some sort.

What I had before, and will probably end up having again, was a set of
scripts that handled all of the details of moving sheets around and
renumbering sheets, while keeping the page references correct on all
of the off-page connectors.

I'm looking forward to implementing a set of scripts again, this time
for a CAD tool for which documentation is available on the file
formats :-)

Here's a thought in case some motivated hacker is looking for a project. gschem and friends already use guile. Wouldn't it be nifty to expand the capabilities and define a guile api for manipulating the schematic and symbol databases? That would provide an abstraction that isolates the file format details from various utilities.
