Of course you can do everything manually in the layout app. Just like you 
can do any layout without a schematic in the first place. But the schematic 
serves as a convenient way to memorize all the necessary connections. For 
more than a dozen parts the convenience becomes a necessity. 

Same with net attributes. It is easy and intuitive to assign different rules 
in the schematic. The layout tool will automatically read from the netlist 
which net should be made fat to accommodate high current. Other may need 
extra spacing because of high voltage. This relieve the brain during manual 
routing. DRC will tell you when you err. An autorouter might also benefit if 
it knows about different minimum rules for different nets.

IMHO, this feature would be a great leap forward.
