The image data delivered by CAD programs is not the kind of input data JPEG was designed to handle. In fact, compressing linework is one of the hardest jobs for JPEG. The resulting file size is big and the quality is bad.


bmps ?  They would be huge and some of the people I communicate with
aren't skilled enough with computers to be able to unzip a file without
help.  You read that right.

CAD images composed of linework are the ideal job for RLE compression. If bmp files can use RLE compresseion, bmp would be a good candidate. BTW, everybody can open GIF files.
