and the PCB FAQ ([2]http://pcb.sourceforge.net/faq.html), but I found no
reference to slotting or the trailing lower case letter being reserved.

   Ah - I did find it in the manual by searching for "lower-case" (which
   is grammatically correct!) in section 7.5: Netlist File Format.  There
   was no mention of "refdes" in that section, which is the word I had
   been searching for.
