I agree completely. Unless the problem is inherently graphical, a GUI isn't needed, and the design should be implemented without it. Then, if you want the sugar, you can wrap a GUI around it. But a user should be able to throw away the GUI without loss of functionality. If the GUI is at all necessary, it will be a barrier to automation and integration at higher levels.
After all, a project isn't just circuits. It includes software, simulations, test fixtures, documentation, presentations, ...
gEDA integrates well into scripted higher level flows. Let's keep it that way. Maybe even improve it.
