It might be worth dropping back to GTK 2.16.x, since the 2.18 series
broke the ms-windows theme engine. I tend to drop a file in
$install_dir/etc/gtk-2.0/gtkrc

containing:

gtk-theme-name="MS-Windows"

That helps the apps look more native, but it turns out that this gives
problems / doesn't work on the 2.18.x series. (2.18.3 onwards forcibly
disable the theme engine in code, so just look non-themed. Up to 2.18.2,
there is breakage with that theme).

Best wishes,

Peter C.
